Our target audience

Image
Their age The main age group that we are targeting is from 15-20, this is as we feel that this is mainly the age group that enjoy horror films the most and will be excited by it. I am apart of this age group myself so will be easier for me to interact with others also in the age group and discuss whether they like my idea and would want to see the trailer. Their gender We are generally aiming ours at both genders as they both can enjoy horror films but males stereotypically like them more as they enjoy the gore and are almost excited by being scared whereas women do not stereotypically. Their class The class of our target audience will be at lower class, this is because they enjoy horror films and it almost makes their life feel better and is a good way to escape their normal lives. They will be in the C2, D and E part of the British Social Grading Scale, this is good because it covers roughly 45% of the UK population. Their interests Although it will be ...

Deciding the type of horror

Image
We have narrowed the options down to a few and now I will discuss the strengths and weaknesses so that I can analyse the best option and which weaknesses are easiest to overcome. We have picked these three as they are the best options for us and are all very popular at the moment. Paranormal The strengths of this option is that it is a very popular type of horror film following the Paranormal Activity films which were all very highly anticipated. It also wouldn't take many actors as they usually include a family at the most and we wouldn't have to dress anyone up as the antagonist. The weaknesses of this is that it would be hard to do the editing as it would be difficult to make things move around and stuff like that without the person doing it being seen. It would also be quite hard to make ours unique as there are many different paranormal stories that all base around the same kind of story. Clown horror  The strengths of this are that it wouldn't be that hard ...

Researching into horror

Typical settings Big abandoned buildings  Narrow dark alleys Dark woods Basements Mental asylums Run down areas Technical codes - camera angles, sounds and editing High and low angles create fear and tension Hand-held shaky camera makes it more realistic and scary Dark sounds like thumping and piano noises are very important - ambient diagetic sounds like footsteps and non-diagetic sounds like heartbeats Long takes - jump scare  Short takes to create pace and go through time quicker Props Dark colours like black relating to evil Dark lighting to create shadows and create mystery Violent props eg; dangerous weapons Old fashioned  Typical themes Good vs Evil Paranormal Science gone bad Zombies Insanity Apocalypse  Thriller

The genre - Horror

Image
The genre that I have decided to go with is horror, this is because I am myself a fan of these types of films and know the necessary techniques that can attract the target audience to it. I have also been attracted into watching films such as paranormal activity because of an effective movie trailer which created tension and left the audience wanting more and this is what I aim to do with mine. I have also chosen this genre as it has a very wide target audience which will benefit our trailer as a very varied audience will enjoy it I feel, making it more successful. The main target of the horror genre is to scare people and I feel that I can use the right techniques and editing to make this possible. My favourite types of horror films are paranormal types like Conjuring and Insidious this is because they are more realistic I feel as things like ghosts are real and I feel the audience can relate to this, for example if it is something like a monster then it can be seen as quite childish....

Questionnaire questions

1. How many films do you watch a month? 0-2, 3-6, 7-10, 11 or more 2. What genre do you prefer? Please specify. 3. Do movie trailers influence the films you watch? 4. What makes a good movie trailer? 5. In a movie trailer, do you prefer fast or slow paced tension? 6. Do you enjoy horror films? 7. What setting do you feel is best? Abandoned building/area, old house, dark woods 8. Do you like realistic horrors or not? I will give this out to people at sixth form and try and get a good, wide response. I am giving it to people at sixth form as this is generally the main age group that our trailer will be aimed at.

Forms and conventions of film trailers

Film production logos Using this will be make my work look more professional and give the audience a sense of familiarity with my work. Promotes the production company and creates a clear brand image. Film title This will promote the film and make sure the audience know what it is called and can be familiar with it. Age certification Shown towards the end of a film trailer, shows what age people can watch the film, each level links to the swearing, violence, nudity etc. of the film. Social media A new convention is to add things like hashtags and Facebook links, this encourages the audience to find out more information about the film and give it more popularity on these social media pages to get it more publicity. Character introductions Informing to the audience of the names of the actors, this is essential as if it is a well-known actor or not the audience could relate to the actor(s) from his other films and want to watch this film because of that. Music and voice-ove...

Narrative - notes from class

Narrative is about the tail, a story of facts In the media, narrative is an event shaper Can be changed, never right or wrong Voice of narrative can vary Organises time and space in compressed form Refers to all events - presented and inferred  Refers to everything audibly or visibly present The way the story is told - how meaning is constructed  Constructed through camerawork, lighting and mise-en-scene No right way to do narrative Is what I am seeing linear? What meaning is made out of digesis? What micro elements best illustrate the narrative approach? How do my codes add up to a narrative style or approach? How does the narrative serve conflict?

Media theorists

Image
Todorov He believes that there are five steps to every story, which are all in chronological order, these steps are; 1. Equilibrium 2. Disruption 3. Realisation 4. Restored order 5. Equilibrium again This theory applies to my trailer as this is the general layout to every story generally follows these steps. Although as ours is a trailer it will not apply to all of these steps and will most likely be the first two steps that are more included and maybe parts of the third step to leave the audience wanting more and will persuade them to want to watch the film. I feel that this approach is a bit generic as it just simply states the general steps in a story which don't always apply to every story. Barthes His theory is that there are five codes which can be put into any narrative; Hermeneutic code - voice of the truth Enigma code - tension is built Senamatic code - voice of a person, additional meaning Symbolic code - deeper meaning Cultural code - looks at audiences...

A2 Task, reflecting on last years work and being media literate

The Task for A2 My task this year will is to make a movie trailer for a film, with the two ancillary tasks of a poster for the film and a film magazine front cover featuring the film. I have chosen this as I feel that a trailer best suits me and I haven't done it before so will be a new experience. Also, the two ancillary tasks I have experience with so I will be able to use that when making them as I know what makes them successful and effective. Reflecting on last years work Last year I feel that I worked well, but I with this experience of blogger, making a short film and a magazine has developed my skills and my work this year will be better because of this. Also, last year I was quite slow to start and I will learn from this and better it this year as I feel that hindered how good my work was last year, as last year I was still doing a lot of the research and planning while I needed to get on with the production part and gave me less time to do it which I feel could have a...
